Out of the Narrows: The Artists’ Haggadah
The year a virus caught the world on fire, my colleague Carol Neiger approached our arts collective (JACC) with an intriguing idea: to create a Haggadah about the plague year and how differently we would be celebrating our central narrative. As Carol, Berit Engen, and I set out to envision the manuscript that eventually became Out of the Narrows: The Artists’ Haggadah, we knew only that we shared a common goal, the desire to create a text rich in meaning and beauty, one that would engage visually and thematically and evoke in-depth discussions at next year’s Seder. Like any project, creating the vision and bringing it to fruition was indeed a journey in itself, one realized through a year-long collaborative process in which we sought to synthesize and refine our individual interests, talents, knowledge sets and deficits, sensibilities, and experiences. Along the way, we read intensively, discussed, often disagreed, and asked many, many questions…
Out of the Narrows: The Artists’ Haggadah
Why is this Haggadah different from all other Haggadahs?
Out of the Narrows: The Artists’ Haggadah is filled with art related to the rituals, text, and story of the Exodus. It will inspire in-depth discussions at your Seder as it guides you through the 15 steps of the Seder. Out of the Narrows is written in gender-sensitive contemporary language while honoring traditional prayers, ceremony, rituals, prayers, liturgy, song, and commentary. Our complete Passover Haggadah includes Hebrew, transliteration, and English, in an easy to follow and beautiful format. It is also a full-color Fine Art book with art as commentary, featuring artwork by 11 artists—members of Jewish Artists Collective Chicago (JACC)—a community of multidisciplinary artists connected through common heritage and committed to sharing ideas, enriching practices, and creating dialogue with community.
